Abstract
Biomechanical optimization of locomotor performance in elite cycling requires precise quantification of resistive forces. Aerodynamic resistance, represented by the drag area cda, constitutes the primary obstacle to forward progression at competitive velocities. This paper reviews the measurement methodology used to isolate this parameter during active locomotion. Through the integration of high-frequency telemetry and physical regression models, sports scientists can achieve empirical validation of aerodynamic changes without the constraints of static wind tunnels. The physiological markers associated with maintaining aerodynamic postures are discussed, emphasizing the metabolic cost of body position adjustments.
Literature Review
Within the biomechanical literature, a robust literature consensus has emerged regarding the division of cycling resistance into rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag. Early research relied on wind tunnels to quantify the drag area cda. While wind tunnels offer controlled wind velocities, they present significant methodological limitations. The static environment does not replicate the dynamic lateral sway, crosswind yaw angles, or road surface vibrations experienced during outdoor locomotion.
