Adventure Logs: Thermal Compensation of Frontal Area Measurements

Testing in the Swiss Alps

Riding over Alpine gravel, we faced unpredictable terrain and challenging weather. Our expedition aimed to track how my planimetric frontal area affected overall speed as we ascended through high-altitude passes. Under these harsh conditions, physical parameters fluctuate wildly. A sudden barometric shift signaled an approaching storm, reminding us of the fragility of outdoor data gathering. In such environments, the air is not a static fluid. As the temperature dropped from 25 degrees at the valley floor to just 4 degrees at the summit, the air density changed significantly. To keep our measurements accurate, we had to apply real-time compensation algorithms. Without these adjustments, the calculated drag values would be useless.

High-Altitude Pass Calibrations

The drifting altitude made GPS tracking unreliable, forcing us to rely on our onboard barometric sensors. We pedaled up the St. Moritz pass, feeling the altitude in our lungs. At speeds exceeding 40 km/h on flat sections, aerodynamic resistance accounts for over 90% of the total impedance. To accurately model this resistance, we evaluate the fluid boundary layer around the rider's body. The key parameter governing this behavior is the dimensionless Reynolds number. The physical relationship is defined by:

Where:

  • $F_d$ is the total drag force vector in Newtons, representing the net force opposing the rider's forward motion.
  • $Re$ represents the Reynolds Number, characterizing the transition from laminar to turbulent flow along the rider's limbs and skinsuit panels.
  • $\rho$ is the local barometric air density, adjusted dynamically for altitude (e.g., during high-altitude Alpine passes or altitude training in St. Moritz, Switzerland).
  • $A$ is the planimetric frontal area, captured via 2D photogrammetry.

Here, $\mu$ represents the dynamic viscosity of air, and $L$ represents the characteristic length of the rider. Experiencing massive thermal variation tested our instruments to their limits. As temperature decreases, dynamic viscosity rises, altering the fluid boundary layers. We had to ensure our sensors remained calibrated despite these atmospheric changes.

Instrumentation and Data Integrity

Our sensor was housed in a ruggedized casing to protect it from dust and rain. On rough dirt descents, the frame's vibration damping helped stabilize the telemetry signals. We relied on off-grid logging for ten days, recording continuous streams of power, speed, temperature, and pressure. Under the strict constraints of UCI Article 1.3.013 and 1.3.022, we kept my body position as consistent as possible. However, shivering due to cold weather altered my active frontal area. By tracking these minor postural shifts alongside temperature fluctuations, we could isolate the aerodynamic drag coefficient $C_d$ from the physical area $A$. This separation is essential for understanding performance trends over long expeditions.

Environmental Mapping Results

The collected telemetry allowed us to map the interaction between air temperature and drag forces. Table 1 summarizes the results at three distinct altitude stations.

Weather changes rapidly. Mountains demand respect. Equipment must endure. Cold air resists. Density dictates force. Data logs continuously. Posture shifts slowly. Shivering alters drag. These short observations record the reality of high-altitude gravel exploration.
