Mathematical Derivation of Skin Friction Drag in Cycling

1. Governing Equations and First Principles

To model the fluid boundary behavior of Skin Friction, we apply Navier-Stokes formulations simplified for external boundary layers. The governing physical relationship for the total aerodynamic drag is expressed as:

Where:

  • $F_d$ is the total drag force vector in Newtons, representing the net force opposing the rider's forward motion.
  • $Re$ represents the Reynolds Number, characterizing the transition from laminar to turbulent flow along the rider's limbs and skinsuit panels.
  • $\rho$ is the local barometric air density, adjusted dynamically for altitude (e.g., during high-altitude Alpine passes or altitude training in St. Moritz, Switzerland).
  • $A$ is the planimetric frontal area, captured via 2D photogrammetry.
  • $C_d$ is the total drag coefficient, which combines pressure drag and skin friction drag.
  • $v$ is the velocity of the fluid relative to the rider.

We begin our analysis from first principles. The total drag area ($C_d A$) is a composite value. It is split into pressure drag (form drag), which results from the pressure distribution around the cyclist's body shape, and skin friction drag, which results from the viscous shear stress acting on the surface of the rider and equipment. At typical racing velocities, skin friction accounts for approximately $10%$ to $15%$ of the total force. Calculating this component requires solving the boundary layer equations for a turbulent flow regime. This is because the Reynolds number of a cyclist typically exceeds $1.0 \times 10^6$.

2. Mathematical Derivation of Frictional Shear Stress

To isolate the skin friction drag force, we must analyze the local shear stress acting along the solid surface boundary. For a Newtonian fluid, the local shear stress at the wall is directly proportional to the velocity gradient perpendicular to the wall. This relationship is defined by Newton's law of viscosity:

Where:

  • $\tau_w$ is the wall shear stress in Pascals ($\text{N/m}^2$).

  • $y$ is the coordinate axis perpendicular to the surface.
  • $(\partial u / \partial y)_{y=0}$ is the velocity gradient evaluated precisely at the wall interface.

Integrating the wall shear stress over the entire surface area of the cyclist and bicycle yields the total skin friction drag force:

Where $S$ is the total wetted surface area, and $\theta$ is the local angle between the surface tangent and the direction of travel. To simplify this integration for engineering purposes, we introduce the dimensionless skin friction coefficient ($C_f$):

This coefficient represents the ratio of viscous shear stress to dynamic pressure. For a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate representing a fabric panel, the local skin friction coefficient can be approximated using the Prandtl-Schlichting formula:

3. Boundary Conditions and Empirical Validation

To validate our theoretical derivation, we conducted a Reynolds number validation. The analysis compared the calculated skin friction coefficients against empirical data collected in a low-turbulence wind tunnel. The boundary conditions were controlled carefully, keeping temperature at $20^\circ\text{C}$ and barometric pressure at $1013.25\text{ hPa}$.

The absolute errors listed in the table above demonstrate that the mathematical model aligns closely with empirical measurements. The slight discrepancy at lower Reynolds numbers is attributed to transitional flow phenomena. Near the leading edge of the fabric panels, the flow is not fully turbulent. This local laminar region exhibits lower shear stress than predicted by the fully turbulent model.

Furthermore, we must address error propagation. Small uncertainties in measuring dynamic viscosity ($\mu$) and velocity ($v$) propagate through our calculations. By applying a multivariate error propagation analysis, we determined that velocity measurements contribute over $80%$ of the total variance in the calculated skin friction coefficient. This highlights the necessity of using high-precision pitot tubes during field trials. The dynamic viscosity variation with temperature must also be accounted for, particularly when testing across diverse thermal profiles. This analytical approach provides a solid foundation for evaluating fabric efficiency under real-world conditions.
