Step 1: Tool Requirements and Pre-Calibration Diagnostics

Aerodynamic sensor calibration requires precise tools. Mechanics must ensure clean workspaces before mounting components. Tolerances must be held strictly to avoid data drift. Tighten the mounting bolts in an alternating pattern. Use the digital torque wrench. Stop exactly at 3.5 Nm. Exceeding this limit will crush the internal strain gauge substrate. This damages the sensor permanently. Check the mechanical clearances. Ensure the sensor does not contact the moving crank arm or the rider's shoe.

Step 3: Sensor Centering and Zero-Offset Verification

Connect the sensor calibration unit. Open the terminal utility. We must perform strain gauge centering. Rotate the crank arm to 180 degrees. Apply a static weight of 10.0 kilograms to the pedal body. Note the output voltage. Clean telemetry relies on repeatable zero-offset metrics.

Adjust the calibration offset manually if the sensor reading drifts. Environmental sealing must be verified. Ensure the rubber boots are seated correctly in their channels. Gaps let moisture enter. Moisture causes voltage anomalies. It skews high-frequency data during wet races.

For riders navigating wind tunnel tests or dynamic velodrome sessions:

  1. Mounting Bracket Check: Inspect for visual flexing under 500 Newtons of pedaling load.
  2. Skinsuit Seam Interface: Check that skinsuit fabric does not flap near the sensor intake ports.
  3. Sensor Port Clearance: Keep the static ports free of chain lube and road grime.

Verify the planimetric frontal area ($A$) calibration value. Ensure it matches the value determined during the initial fit session. Check the Reynolds number calibration profile. This profile manages the boundary layer transition calculations.

Step 4: Troubleshooting Mechanical Play and Slop

Mechanical slop in the bottom bracket shell will skew drag measurements. Perform a wiggle test. Grab both crank arms. Shake them laterally. Feel for play. If play is detected, disassemble the bottom bracket. Replace the worn cartridge bearings immediately.

Friction losses in the drivetrain must be isolated from aerodynamic resistance measurements. Clean the chain. Lubricate it with a high-efficiency wax.
