Boundary Layer Drift and Thermal Dynamics
Testing in the Swiss Alps
During our self-supported expedition across the high gravel passes of the Swiss Alps, the sensors encountered extreme environmental shifts that threatened the integrity of our aerodynamic log files. Rain fell steadily. As we climbed toward the Grimsel Pass, the temperature dropped from twenty-four degrees Celsius to just three degrees in less than two hours of riding. These thermal variations alter the density of the air, which directly shifts the boundary layer separation point along the cyclist's legs and bicycle frame. Altitude increases rapidly. At these elevations, the reduced barometric pressure changes the kinematic viscosity of the air, meaning the drag coefficient measured at sea level no longer applies. Instruments drift. The barometric shift was so pronounced that our altitude logs began to show a vertical deviation of over fifty meters within a single hour.
This mountain terrain demands instrumentation that resists both extreme weather and physical abuse. Roads are rough. The constant impact of alpine gravel transmits high-frequency vibrations through the handlebars, making vibration damping a requirement for the sensor mountings. Casing must survive. We housed our telemetry components in a ruggedized casing that prevented moisture ingress during heavy downpours. Data must survive. While riding off-grid for several days, our logging system stored high-frequency sensor readings on internal flash memory without relying on cloud synchronization. Power was limited. We optimized the firmware to run on a low-power sleep cycle during descent sections where aerodynamic measurements were less variable.
The boundary layer behaves differently under these alpine conditions. Air gets thin. The lower air density at high elevations reduces the overall aerodynamic drag force, which partially compensates for the increased physiological cost of climbing. Winds are unpredictable. Gusts coming off the glaciers change the yaw angle of the apparent wind, causing the boundary layer to detach prematurely from the down tube. Handling becomes difficult. Under these dynamic crosswinds, a deep-section front wheel can cause steering instability that forces the rider to adopt a wider, less aerodynamic posture. Posture changes CdA.
Thermal Calibration in Valais
To address these environmental challenges, we must calibrate our sensors for thermal variation. The air density is calculated using the ideal gas law:

- $T$ represents the absolute temperature in Kelvin.
- $R$ is the specific gas constant for dry air.
The change in the drag coefficient due to thermal effects is modeled by the following relationship:
Here, $\alpha$ represents the thermal compensation coefficient of the sensor housing, and $\Delta T$ represents the temperature difference from the calibration baseline. Without applying this correction, the sensor output drifts significantly as the ambient temperature changes. We apply a real-time compensation algorithm in our data pipeline. This adjustment ensures that the reported drag values reflect the rider's actual aerodynamics rather than sensor temperature sensitivity. The correction is computed at a frequency of ten Hertz.
Our testing in the Valais valley confirmed the accuracy of this thermal correction method. The sun warmed the valley floor. As the air temperature rose, the real-time compensation algorithm adjusted the density value, keeping the calculated CdA stable. Sensors remained aligned. The ruggedized casing prevented the internal components from overheating despite the direct sunlight and slow climbing speeds. Battery life remained stable. The off-grid logging system operated continuously for twelve hours without requiring external recharge. This performance validates the robustness of our hardware design under real-world conditions.
Barometric Shifts in Remote Trails
On the remote gravel trails connecting Italy and Switzerland, we encountered severe weather fronts that caused rapid barometric pressure changes. Storms approached quickly. These weather systems create a false altitude drift because the barometric sensor interprets the dropping atmospheric pressure as an increase in elevation. Algorithms must compensate. By combining the barometric data with GPS elevation readings, we isolate the weather-induced pressure changes from actual climbing. This sensor fusion is necessary for accurate energy expenditure calculations. Air density drops. A lower pressure reduces the aerodynamic resistance, allowing the rider to maintain higher speeds for the same power output. Speed increases.

The table above details the sensor drift observed across different geographical regions during our field trials. We note that the highest drift occurs at high elevations with low temperatures. This corresponds to the Valais Gravel route, where the temperature was four point two degrees Celsius. The sensor drift remained under one percent in all environments. This level of stability is sufficient for field optimization of pacing strategies. The data logging remained reliable throughout the entire expedition.
We observed that the boundary layer transition is highly sensitive to surface roughness. Gravel dust accumulates. As dust coats the frame tubes and skinsuit fabric, it acts as a boundary layer trip, causing the flow to become turbulent earlier. Drag increases slightly. This surface contamination is difficult to replicate in a clean wind tunnel environment. Field testing on remote trails provides these insights. We must clean the sensors regularly to prevent dust from blocking the pitot ports. A blocked port causes immediate sensor failure.
