Testing on the Alpine Gravel of Furka Pass

The wind howling across the high mountain ridges carries a damp chill that penetrates the outer layers of my winter gear. Behind the handlebars of my gravel rig, my fingers grow numb as we climb the steep, rocky switchbacks. Alpine gravel demands absolute focus. A single patch of loose slate can send a rider sliding into the deep ravines below. Yet, the physical challenge of riding through these harsh conditions is only half the battle. In these remote environments, logging accurate scientific data becomes a constant war against the elements. The rapid thermal variation between the sun-drenched valley floor and the freezing alpine summit triggers a massive barometric shift. This atmospheric shift distorts the sensor baselines, threatening the integrity of our telemetry logs. Without robust temperature compensation, the measurements of skin friction and aerodynamic drag would drift into uselessness.

As we climb higher into the clouds, the air density drops. This change alters the fluid dynamics of the rider-bike system. Skin friction, the drag force caused by the shearing of air molecules across the body, varies with the air temperature. When testing prototype telemetry units under these harsh conditions, we analyze how the cold, dense air near the valley floor transitions into the thin, dry air of the high-altitude passes. This environmental transition creates a drifting altitude log. To correct these errors, we utilize a ruggedized casing that dampens road vibration, ensuring the internal barometric sensors capture the true atmospheric pressure without noise. Off-grid logging requires such hardware optimizations to survive weeks of remote mapping.

Mathematical Formulation & Governing Physics
