Power Meter Accuracy and Calibration
A power meter is only as useful as it is accurate. Power data feeds your training zones, fitness tracking, and pacing decisions — so even a few percent of error can put you in the wrong zone or distort your normalized power. Power meter accuracy calibration is the routine of zeroing, scaling, and temperature-compensating the strain gauges so that every watt reported reflects real mechanical output. What Accuracy Means
Accuracy is the closeness of a meter's reported watts to the true mechanical power delivered. It is expressed as a percentage, for example ±1.5. A reading of 200 W on a ±1.5 meter means true power is between 197 W and 203 W.
There are two distinct properties:
- Accuracy: how close reported power is to true power.
- Precision (consistency): how repeatable the reading is from ride to ride at the same true load.
A meter can be precise but inaccurate (consistently 5 high, for example), which is still usable for tracking your own progress, as long as the offset is stable. But for comparing data across devices, sharing with a coach, or trusting absolute numbers, both matter.

How a Power Meter Measures Watts
A strain gauge deforms slightly under load, changing its electrical resistance. The meter measures this resistance change, converts it to torque (), and multiplies by angular velocity () to get power:

Zero-Offset: Do This Every Ride
Zero-offset (also called "zeroing") resets the sensor's no-load baseline. Over time and with temperature change, a gauge can drift so that it reads a small non-zero value even when unloaded. If uncorrected, this offset is added to (or subtracted from) every subsequent reading.
How to zero-offset:
- Warm up for 10 minutes so the crank and gauge reach riding temperature.
- Stop, unclip, and ensure no load on the pedals or crank.
- Trigger the zero-offset command on your head unit or app.
- Confirm the reported offset value is within the manufacturer's normal range.
This takes seconds and corrects the largest common source of error. Do it before every ride, and again if conditions change dramatically (e.g., climbing into much colder air). It is especially important for pedal-based systems, which are exposed to temperature swings and moisture.
Full Calibration: Setting the Scale
Full calibration sets the scaling factor that converts measured strain into torque and then watts. Unlike zero-offset, it does not usually need repeating every ride.
Factory calibration
Most meters arrive factory-calibrated against a known reference. High-quality meters are individually calibrated on a dynamometer so that the scale is set per unit, accounting for manufacturing variation in the strain gauges.
Field calibration with a known weight
Some riders perform a manual calibration by hanging a known weight from the pedal at a measured crank angle and checking the reported torque. The expected torque is:
where is mass, is gravitational acceleration, is crank length, and is crank angle from horizontal. Comparing the reported torque to this expected value reveals scale error. This is optional for most users but valuable if you suspect drift.
Temperature Drift
Strain gauges change resistance with temperature, which shifts the zero point and the scale. This is the single biggest accuracy challenge for outdoor riding. Moving from a 15°C indoor trainer to a 30°C summer road, or descending from a warm valley to a cold summit, can shift readings by several percent if uncompensated.
Modern meters address this with:
- Automatic temperature compensation: on-board temperature sensors adjust the offset and scale in real time.
- Periodic auto-zeroing: some systems re-zero during coasting when they detect zero torque.
- User zero-offset: the manual correction that catches residual drift.

A Pre-Ride Calibration Routine
- Charge or replace the battery if low.
- Verify crank length is set correctly in your head unit.
