Step 1: Interface Inspection and Play Detection

To minimize power transmission losses, a mechanic must begin with thorough play/slop detection across the entire drivetrain. Any minor displacement at the crank spindle interface directly corrupts the strain gauge wheatstone bridge reading. We mount the bicycle securely in a professional workstand. Using a dial indicator, the technician measures axial and radial play. If lateral play exceeds 0.05 mm, precision shims must be installed to eliminate spindle movement.

Mechanical wear in the bottom bracket bearings introduces friction losses that escape sensor detection. This discrepancy directly impacts the calculated mechanical work:

Step 2: Torque Calibration and Sensor Centering

Correct mounting torque is paramount to prevent signal hysteresis. Installers must apply medium thread lock to all thread interfaces to lock down fasteners against road vibrations.

During installation, check that the strain gauge centering matches the neutral axis of the crank arm. If the sensor is misaligned, bending forces will contaminate the pure torsional strain signal. Tighten the crank arm bolts progressively in a cross pattern. Never exceed the maximum torque tolerance specified by the manufacturer. Once torqued, check the calibration offset value. This offset must fall within the manufacturer specified range.

Step 3: Verification and Environmental Sealing

Apply a high-quality environmental sealing compound over the electronics casing. Water ingress degrades the insulation resistance of the wheatstone bridge, resulting in signal drift. The mechanic conducts a static weight test to verify calibration accuracy. Suspend a certified 20 kg weight from the pedal spindle with the crank arm positioned horizontally. Confirm that the telemetry system reports the exact calculated torque. Repeat the test at various angles. This ensures that the dynamic response is uniform.
